PowTechnology are delighted to welcome James Lane to our growing Sales Team! James comes to us with solid technical knowledge from his role an Electrical Controls, Instrumentation and Calibration Engineer and has definitely hit the ground running! In this article, James tells us more about himself and his role with PowTechnology.
“I’ve always been attracted to instrumentation and industrial technology, because its constantly evolving and completely transforming the way manufacturers operate!
Over time, I’ve moved increasingly into commercial roles. The blend of technical and commercial is challenging and fascinating, because every customer and every application is different. I love working directly with customers, understanding their issues and helping them find the right technical solutions.
Having worked as an engineer myself, I understand the day-to-day challenges our customers face. I’ve experienced the same equipment failures, time pressures, maintenance demands and the reality of keeping production running.
I was drawn to PowTechnology by their forward-thinking approach. I wanted to be part of a successful and growing technology business, where my own skills and experience could develop and make a difference. PowTechnology is continually developing new technology and solutions that help customers prepare for the future. The focus on innovation and connected industrial data really differentiates the business.
I believe that remote monitoring, industrial IoT and connected data are becoming increasingly important. It’s clear that manufacturers are under increasing pressure to reduce costs, improve efficiency and minimise downtime. Connected industrial data gives businesses real-time visibility into what’s happening across their operations, allowing them to identify issues before they become costly failures.
Accurate, real-time information means decisions are based on fact, not assumption. Operational data helps identify inefficiencies, improve maintenance planning, reduce downtime, optimise energy usage and ultimately increase productivity. It offers confidence when making investment, operational and strategic decisions.
There’s certainly no shortage of variety in this role! In just three months I’ve been to sites within chemical manufacturing, aerospace, food production, aggregates and heavy industrial engineering. I love it!
Trade shows are also one of my favourite parts of the job. Like site visits, they allow you to engage with customers face-to-face and have more meaningful conversations. I’ve already exhibited with PowTechnology at CHEMUK and Siemens Transform and I’ve attended the Water Equipment Show, MACH2026, CONEX events and Farnborough International Airshow, each with its unique focus and applications.
My approach is always to start by listening. Taking time to really understand the customer’s processes and issues is key to identifying where technology will deliver the greatest benefits. PowTechnology have always differentiated themselves by this consultative approach, so I definitely feel like I’m on the right team!
I’ve been surprised how many industrial sites still operate with very little visibility of what’s happening day-to-day. It’s just how they’ve always done it. I walk in and I’m overwhelmed with ideas on how data could optimise everything, from productivity and waste reduction, to safety, sustainability and sales. I love it when I see how much I can help them and add value to their processes!
It doesn’t take long to demonstrate the benefits of reliable, connected data from sensors and machines. It makes sense that, if you can access operational data from anywhere, it’s much easier to monitor performance across multiple sites. The same data can also be used in real-time by multiple departments, such as purchasing, logistics, maintenance and EHS.
Once data is collected and visualised, hidden inefficiencies often become obvious! That might be equipment running unnecessarily, excessive energy consumption, maintenance issues or production bottlenecks. Data enables faster decision-making, automatic alerts, historical trend analysis and collaboration between engineering, maintenance and management teams.
If a customer is just beginning their digital transformation journey and still building their confidence, I recommend they start small and build from there. You don’t need to monitor everything on day one. Begin with a single process, asset or production line. Learn from that data, demonstrate the value and then expand. That approach reduces risk, whilst allowing the business to see measurable benefits early on.
Going forward, I’m especially looking forward to helping more customers reduce their energy consumption. Energy costs remain one of the biggest challenges for manufacturers and being able to demonstrate measurable savings, whilst improving reliability is something I’m passionate about.
PowTechnology is a fantastic place to work if you enjoy solving problems and learning new things. The team is incredibly supportive, the technology is exciting and everyone is focused on helping customers achieve real results. It’s a business that’s growing and looking ahead, which makes it an exciting place to be! The PowTechnology culture is amazing! The whole team has been brilliant. Everyone works together, shares ideas and supports one another. There’s a real team mentality where people are always willing to help, regardless of their role.
I’d like to say a special thank you to Ryan Parsons, our Commercial Manager and Will Brown, our IIoT Solutions Manager. Having such a high level of support from these commercial and technical experts has been invaluable.
Outside of work, I like challenging myself, keeping fit at the gym and getting out running. I’ve already done the Sheffield Half Marathon and I’m currently training hard for the Solihull Half. Staying active helps me switch off after work and gives me the same sense of achievement that I enjoy in my career. I also enjoy spending time with my three cats, who definitely keep life interesting!“
Dave Oakes, PowTechnology CEO, added:
“James joined PowTechnology just a few months ago and has made a significant impact in a very short space of time. Coming from an instrumentation background, he quickly understood not only our technology but, more importantly, how it delivers real value to customers.
James combines strong technical knowledge with a genuine ability to build relationships, which has helped him identify new opportunities and engage effectively with prospects across a wide range of industries.
What has impressed me most is James’s energy, enthusiasm and willingness to learn. He has represented PowTechnology exceptionally well at events such as ChemUK and Siemens Transform, communicating our solutions with confidence and professionalism. He has already converted a number of opportunities into orders and is a valued member of our team.
We’re delighted with the progress he has made and excited to see what he will achieve as he continues to grow with the business!”
