Thursday 4th September

10.30 - 11.30
Oil and Gas production in the North Sea presents some difficult challenges for the measurement of flow
Current Upstream Oil and Gas production presents challenging flow
scenarios. Due to the processes required to produce heavy oil, the raw
product that flows through pipelines will inevitably be a highly
viscous mixture of crude oil, sand and other production chemicals.
Accurate measurement of viscous flow streams is a growing requirement
in a number of industrial sectors - from heavy oil recovery to
pharmaceutical production. We need Flow meters designed to provide
accurate measurement of the high viscosity fluids, that will last the life
of the pipeline (surviving the abrasive effects of produced sand) and
longer with low maintenance and no replacement parts. It is beneficial
to require minimal up and downstream piping, reduced cost of
installation and the potential to reclaim valuable real estate. These
devices should have the ability to handle high temperatures and high
pressures. It is desirable to ensure that we do not suffer from
blocked impulse lines or that we have the ability to detect it if we do.
Measurement of fluids such as Abrasive slurries (i.e. Bitumen) Crude
Oil Production with sand particles Viscous fluids (including Cement)
High Temperature Applications (i.e. Coker Streams) High Pressure
Applications (i.e. Injection wells)
