Sensing in manufacturing

The manufacturing industry always plays a major role in social and economical developments in the UK. As a leading force in the industrialisation, the UK has always been a major source of innovations in manufacturing technologies. In recent years, following the rapid progresses in sensing technologies, connectivity, and big-data, digitisation of the industrial processes is increasingly bringing the manufacturing industry towards a new age of intelligent manufacturing, turning manufacturing plants into smart factories.

In a manufacturing process, sensing technologies are key technologies to ensure the quality of the produce and the efficiency of manufacturing processes. Following the moving of manufacturing towards digital and intelligent manufacturing, sensing technology becomes increasingly important in enabling process data and quality data of the produces to be generated in time and ensure the manufacturing processes to be intelligent, integrated, efficient and effective.

The emergence of the new manufacturing technologies such as Additive Manufacturing, and progressing of manufacturing towards Industry4 in recent years, are also raising new challenges and needs for novel sensing solutions to provide appropriate process monitoring and product QA&QC requirements.

In a one-day event, The Knowledge Transfer Network aim to bring together manufacturers, sensing technology providers, new technology developers, and other relevant stakeholders including innovation funders, to network, share knowledge, to stimulate new ideas, develop collaborations and partnerships, and to promote the innovation development in manufacturing sensing technologies in the UK. In this event, a number of key expert speakers have been invited to give talks covering areas including: market challenges and needs, the state of the art commercial sensing technologies, novel emerging sensor technologies, and also relevant innovation funding opportunities. The event takes place on Tuesday 27 March 2018 at the Manchester Conference Centre.
