Custom eddy current and draw wire sensors for subsea oil & gas applications
At this year’s Instrumentation Scotland & Offshore Systems 2010 exhibition (8-9 September 2010) precision sensor manufacturer Micro-Epsilon (UK) Ltd (stand 703) will be showcasing a range of displacement sensors and non-contact temperature measurement products for subsea, oil & gas applications, including draw wire sensors, eddy current displacement sensors, thermal imagers and inline process temperature sensors.
Micro-Epsilon’s wireSENSOR range of draw-wire (string pot) displacement sensors uses three main measurement methods: a multi-turn potentiometer, an incremental encoder or an absolute encoder. One of these devices is mounted onto the drum axle, converting the rotary motion of the drum into a signal that can be evaluated. The measured displacement can be output as an analogue current, voltage or potentiometric signal. For a digital output, there is a choice of HTL or TTL, with interfaces for most of the common fieldbus systems, including CANopen, SSI and Profibus.
As with traditional tape measures, the wireSENSOR series is capable of measuring around corners and edges. Micro-Epsilon supplies as accessories deflection pulleys, which deflect the steel wire in the desired direction. The sensors cover a measuring range from 50mm right up to 50m. Options are available for harsh environments (including subsea), with an IP67 version available.
Chris Jones, Managing Director at Micro-Epsilon (UK) Ltd comments: “Our draw-wire sensors are being used in a wide range of applications, from general industrial machinery and scissor lifts, through to more specific uses such as pneumatic and hydraulic systems, forklift trucks and subsea oil & gas systems. Our wireSENSOR range is very popular with machine builders and OEMs, who require low cost, robust, reliable sensing solutions that can be easily integrated into their customer’s existing machine, components or control and automation systems.”
Unique eddy current sensors
Visitors to Micro-Epsilon’s stand will also be able to see the company’s brand new range of eddy current ECT (Embedded Coil Technology) sensors. ECT is a technological breakthrough in eddy current sensor design and manufacture, which overcomes the previous limitations of using eddy current sensors.
Due to its ultra-compact design and by using new inorganic materials in its construction, the new eddyNCDT ECT sensors provide almost unlimited scope in terms of the external design and geometrical shape of the sensor. This means that sensors can be adapted for almost any use, including subsea, oil and gas applications.
Micro-Epsilon’s eddyNCDT ECT sensors offer extreme mechanical robustness, resulting in longer service intervals and higher temperature stability. The complete circuit electronics are integrated into the sensor itself, providing a more compact solution for OEMs and machine builders. The sensors are suitable for harsh environments, including high vibration, impact shocks, high pressure/vacuum, and high operating temperatures up to 350 deg C. Sensors have also been produced with extremely low thermal drift and with temperature errors of less than 20ppm/K.
Non-contact temperature measurement
As well as displacement sensors, Micro-Epsilon will also be showcasing a range of non-contact temperature measurement products, including thermal imaging cameras and inline process temperature sensors.
After recently setting up a partnership agreement with Flir Systems UK, a leading supplier of infrared thermography systems, Micro-Epsilon is now able to offer the thermoIMAGER i series of handheld thermal imaging cameras, as well as its own inline process temperature sensors.

SlugMaster® flow meter - developed for difficult slugging flow applications
The ABLE SlugMaster® system deals effectively with problematic process conditions by the use of dual ultrasonic technologies. The system uses time of flight metering during low aeration periods and switches to reflexor metering during heavy aeration and slugging, slurry or solid particle entrainment.
ABLE's ultrasonic flow meters, using time of flight technology, have exceptional measurement accuracy for clamp on meters, even with small levels of aeration. In the SlugMaster® system, this accuracy is used to calibrate a tandom reflexor meter during the window when both meters are able to operate due to low aeration in the fluid.
By calibrating the reflexor to the time of flight at the point where time of flight is close to failing to measure, the reflexor becomes vastly more accurate than a standard reflexor out of the box.
Ordinarily, the change over point between these two technologies would be difficult to achieve, yet with the SlugMaster®, an accurate and seamless changeover between the two metering technologies is achieved with unique mathematical software that enables accuracies that exceed the raw change over of both meters.
The SlugMaster® system is a unique dual technology flow metering solution for accurate, dependable flow measurement on slugging applications. A reference list is available on request.

Now measure up to 16 pressure inputs at the same time from your laptop ...
Ellison Sensors introduced the GS4200 USB Digital pressure transducer three years ago after identifying a need for a more flexible approach to pressure logging and measurement. It is a superior all round product in that it is so quick and simple to use, yet there is no compromise on accuracy or long term stability. The latest development allows the user to measure up to 16 pressure inputs at the same time from just one software application, saving precious time and effort.
The GS4200 USB uses superior Silicon-on-sapphire sensor technology which has long been incorporated into ESI sensors for high accuracy even in demanding applications, but the unique feature of the GS4200 USB is its ability to measure, analyse and record pressure directly onto your PC or laptop without the need for costly I/O interface boards. Power is provided from the USB port, eliminating the need for extra connections and the data is presented via the ESI-USB configurable software that is supplied with the transducer. It has instant connection with auto- detection and will automatically configure with your laptop or PC via USB protocol. The transducer is compatible with USB 1.1 and 2.0 and is fully supported by ESI-USB windows interface software available for 98, 98SE, 2000, ME, XP and Vista. Data can be displayed in graphical or tabular form with a choice of pressure units and fully adjustable scales. Data can be saved to a file or exported to Excel. Its precision accuracy is greater than 0.01% and pressure ranges are available from 500 mbar to 3,000bar.
In identifying the needs of the customer, the natural course of the products development was to enable the user to measure multiple inputs all at once, instantaneously. Having to use multiple computers and endless connections is time consuming and inefficient. For customers like the British Geological Survey for example, the ESI USB transducer with 16 inputs will be an invaluable tool. The main difficulty at the moment arises when trying to monitor several transducers at the same time. ‘The problem is that we currently have to have several transducer windows open at the same time. With a small computer screen this means we can only see the topmost transducer information’ said Dr. Chris Rochelle of the British Geological Survey. ‘A single transducer window on the screen that could display the pressure status of a number off experiments at the same time would allow us to see all their pressures at a glance, and hence better monitor their progress’ he concludes.
Ellison sensor International, based in North Wales, has been at the forefront of sensor technology for over 20 years. ESI has developed a reputation for high quality pressure sensors and established a foothold in the ever growing market for accurate and reliable pressure measurement. As well as providing custom sensor design facilities to exacting specifications, ESI has a policy of continual improvement and a commitment to development and innovation.

ABB and partner to highlight safety and flow expertise at Instrumentation Scotland
ABB Limited (stand 308) and its Instrumentation Alliance partner, JWF Process Solutions Ltd (stand 118), will be hosting two workshops at the Instrumentation Scotland & Offshore Systems exhibition, as well as showcasing the latest temperature, pressure, data recording and flowmetering technologies.
The first workshop, Wireless – providing the key to unlocking stranded information in your field instruments, will commence at 12.30 pm on Wednesday 8th September. Presented by ABB’s process communications expert, Gareth Johnston, the workshop will show how WirelessHART technology can be added to existing field instruments to enable operators to access a raft of new process and maintenance information. Although wireless technology is unlikely to replace analogue 4-20mA or fieldbus communications, it offers an attractive alternative in locations where conventional communications would be difficult or expensive to install.
The second workshop, presented by ABB’s DP flow expert, Ian Robertson, is titled A solution to measure the flow rate of Wet Gas. In wellhead applications, the mixture of fluids and gases has traditionally been separated into its various phases to enable accurate measurement of each of the component phases, a critical requirement in determining production capabilities. Although effective, this approach can also be very costly. This workshop will explain how using a wet gas flowmeter to determine the gas and liquid phases can offer significant CAPEX savings compared to expensive separation equipment, ideal for marginal fields where profits can be tight.
The event will also provide an opportunity for visitors to see ABB’s latest product offering for oil, gas and petrochemical applications.
A major attraction will be the latest generation of ABB’s 2600T pressure transmitter family. New features include the use of ABB’s common HMI platform, which now features across its instrumentation product range. Enabling operators to easily scroll through and select options, the HMI simplifies operation, maintenance and training, reducing cost of ownership and providing a consistent user experience. Other key features include an easily replaceable electronics module, enabling transmitters to be quickly and safely upgraded in the field and a standard safety pressure transmitter variant, approved to IEC61508 and TUV Nord for use in SIL2 applications up to 600 bar.
The 2600T series also has the optional extra of ABB’s Plugged Impulse Line Detection system (PILD). Incorporated within the transmitter itself, the system compares the application background noise against a pre-programmed baseline to detect blocked impulse lines, with any blockages being relayed as an alarm via HART, Profibus or Foundation Fieldbus.
Also on show will be examples of ABB’s ProcessMaster flowmeter. With a choice of liner and sensor electrode options, plus other features including a host of diagnostic capabilities, the ProcessMaster is ideal for oil and gas applications demanding enhanced performance with reduced complexity.
These products will be accompanied by ABB’s surface mount temperature assemblies for demanding applications, plus the SM500F field mountable data recorder, an electronic data recorder that can be installed anywhere with a choice of pipe, panel and wall mounting options.

Fixed Gas Detection
A number of fixed gas detection options exist for different applications. Perfect for fence-line detection and coverage of larger areas, for example, the Draeger Polytron Pulsar Open Path gas detector is able to detect hydrocarbon leaks within a line of sight of up to 200m.
The Polytron IR has a built-in library which stores the detection characteristics of over 30 gases and can be calibrated with a common gas such as methane. The target gas can then be selected from the internal gas library without requiring re-calibration or complex calculations. As well as explosive levels, Draeger IR sensors can be used to provide low measuring ranges in ppm or %volume in leak detection applications.
Catalytic bead sensors such as the Polytron Ex are ideal to protect against hydrogen and are available in a HT version for high temperature applications above 65ºC. For hydrofluoric acid and hydrogen sulphide, universal transmitters such as the Polytron 3000 or 7000 will accept any Draeger sensor and allow sensor-specific information to be downloaded from the embedded sensor EEPROM.
Cost effective, high quality performance
The sensor lies at the heart of every gas detection system. Fast response, stable signals, good measurement performance, low drift, long extended lifetime, extended temperature ranges, poison resistance and wide measuring ranges form just part of the sensor selection criteria.

SOLUTION UPDATE: AVEVA INSTRUMENTATION
In June 2009, AVEVA launched the AVEVA Instrumentation solution to address the needs of instrumentation and control engineers/designers across the EPC and Owner Operator sectors.
The last 12 months have seen this solution enthusiastically adopted by customers across the world, and, in response to customer feedback, AVEVA has developed a new version of the solution, bringing even more significant benefits. This is a brief update on both the background and delivery of these enhancements.
Engineering Design or Plant Operations? AVEVA Instrumentation suits both.
AVEVA Instrumentation focuses closely on intuitive, simple-to-use solutions that suit engineers’ and designers’ working methods and make their jobs easier. This end-user focus has made AVEVA Instrumentation a hit with both Owner Operators and EPCs, across the full lifecycle of instrument information.
The largest area of spending in new plants is control and instrumentation, and the largest area of spending for operating plants is the day-to-day management and maintenance of this instrumentation. With an average shutdown cost of $8 million, the savings that can be made by properly managing instrumentation and therefore preventing downtime are persuasive, to say the least.
Supporting closer relationships between Owner Operators and EPCs
The relationships between Owner Operators and EPCs are changing. Both parties understand the importance of quality engineering information, and they are starting to collaborate much earlier and more regularly, rather than simply at the traditional point of handover.
As part of this evolution towards more fluid movement of information, technology has to adapt to comply with established information standards and multiple human languages. This is precisely what AVEVA Instrumentation now delivers: it supports KKS and ECS, the tagging standards for the power industry, and it also has foreign language capability, including multi-byte languages (Korean, Chinese, Japanese), Russian, French and Spanish, amongst others.
Cost saving, scheduling and quality continue, as ever, to dominate the EPC and OO landscape, and the industry is now placing increasing focus on Fieldbus as a way of improving results in these areas. In AVEVA Instrumentation, all outputs from Fieldbus are automatically generated. This saves time and effort and, therefore, money.
Finally, AVEVA Instrumentation has further broadened its compatibility by incorporating a new document management interface, and integration with the AVEVA schematic model. The document management interface works with industry standard document management applications and is being used successfully by some of the major industry players within the AVEVA customer base.
Open and free exchange of information
Free and open information exchange is at the heart of AVEVA’s product strategy. An enhanced P&ID interface can now exchange, and add value to, information from P&ID variants, including those from third-party suppliers. Moreover, AVEVA Instrumentation is now fully compatible with AVEVA NET, the Information Management solution that underpins much of AVEVA’s wider Owner Operator and EPC offerings.
The tight coupling between AVEVA Instrumentation and AVEVA NET means that information can be exchanged between AVEVA Instrumentation and other systems, whether third-party, home-grown or, indeed, from AVEVA itself. Checking and linking of the data can then occur, making potential dependencies visible to both managers and frontline users, thus preventing error and duplication of effort.
For example, a designer using AVEVA Instrumentation can create an instrument and publish the design data for that instrument to AVEVA NET. This then presents the designer with related P&IDs and documentation, together with status information, to provide additional context and enable the designer to make more informed design decisions.
In the same way, new integration features, like the ability to click on an instrument on the P&ID to give instant access to a plant items datasheet, provide the engineer with timely and detailed information. Back to top
