Manage inventory remotely with smart level sensor

Intermediate bulk containers (IBCs) are ideal for the safe storage and transportation of liquids – but they raise a number of challenges for level measurement. They’re often located remotely, and several IBCs can be scattered over a wide area. The Micropilot FWR30 radar sensor from Endress+Hauser solves these difficulties by offering remote access to the tanks to provide complete asset and inventory information, including measured value, ambient temperature and container location.

In most production plants, IBC level measurement is overlooked. For this reason, missing stocks are often only registered when the tank has already run empty and the production process has stopped. As the world’s first wireless 80GHz IIoT radar sensor, the Micropilot FWR30, combined with Netilion Value, allows you to access data from anywhere at any time, speeding up processes and helping you to optimise logistics and storage practices.

Simplicity from scratch

The FWR30 is designed with simplicity in mind. The wireless and battery-powered sensor can be mounted on any plastic tank in a few simple steps by the user. Commissioning is done by pressing a single button and without the need for sensor calibration. The small device is designed to fit perfectly on the exterior of stackable tanks without affecting their handling.

Data at your fingertips

You can access the data from the FWR30 via a smartphone, tablet or desktop computer using Endress+Hauser’s app Netilion Value. It provides a dashboard for an overview of your measured values, historical data, a map to track all your measurement points, alarms and notifications, and it’s straightforward to use. Smart sensors can be integrated and connected in a few clicks and used immediately. The certified Netilion cloud service also meets all the requirements for security and data privacy, and has been audited and awarded with a 4-star best-in-class rating for process industries from EuroCloud.

High-end technology at a low cost

The Micropilot FWR30 costs less than £500, including a year’s subscription to Netilion Value and a mounting bracket. For more information or to place an order, call 0161 286 5000 or visit netilion.endress.com/value/micropilot-fwr30

More visibility in processes: VEGA extends its sensor portfolio for easy process automation

With its new compact series of VEGABAR pressure sensors and VEGAPOINT level switches, the level and pressure specialist VEGA,  has advanced its capability to become a full-range supplier for level and pressure controls in process automation. These lower-priced instruments are aimed at standard automation applications – designed to meet the latest requirements in industry and offer some new features for better productivity.

New standard sensors with a focus on hygiene

Just like other sectors, the food industry does not seek extreme solutions, it continually looks for optimisation and efficiency improvements, and often simple is usually best. VEGA has therefore expanded its product range to include a compact instrument series. It proves: Automation can be both simple and highly efficient without sacrificing innovation, dependability, hygiene or accuracy.

Standard applications of the food and beverage sectors in particular, can be automated very economically with these new compact pressure sensors and level switches. Integration into the processes, as well as adjustment are especially easy to carry out. In this sensor class, multiple process connection options are also available, which also supports the continuous improvement of production facilities. The focus here is on compact design, flexibility, safety and optimised hygiene.

Bluetooth for faster set-up and adjustment

Set up: the new instrument series can be easily set up and managed with a smartphone or tablet. Especially in environments such as clean rooms, where physical access involves a lot of effort, the remote communication means the device adjustment and operation become considerably faster, easier and safer. In combination with the award winning VEGA Tools app, this means the sensor configuration and maintenance in these areas becomes extremely convenient and time saving.

Standardisation gives birth to efficiency

Process connections: a uniform standard for all areas of application. This applies especially to the fully hygienic adapter system, which is designed to be compatible with both the new VEGABAR pressure sensors and VEGAPOINT capacitive level switches, as well as the existing range of VEGASWING vibrating level switches. They can be flexibly selected according to individual process connections and quickly interchanged between different technologies. Signal cable connections and weld sockets are also standardised too.

Hygienic design down to the last detail

All the instruments are built to withstand intense CIP processes. All the stainless steel surfaces of the sensors that come into contact with the product feature optimal surface finish values.  All the materials of these new devices are approved and tested according to FDA and EC 1935/2004, and confirmed by independent laboratories and institutes. The design of the instruments is certified according to the European EHEDG Directive and the North American 3-A Sanitary Standards. The components were also designed in accordance with GMP regulations (Good Manufacturing Practices) so that all microorganisms are reliably removed by cleaning and cannot multiply on surfaces or in gaps.

Easily visible sensor status

Sensors can be mounted in very large, open areas or in very confined spaces. It is crucial to be able to see sensor readings quickly and easily, so that operators can react as quickly as possible, especially in the event of a fault.  The development of the new VEGABAR and VEGAPOINT sensors focused on simplicity of use and a fast and easy status reading that comes along with it. With an all-round, super bright 360° display, switching states can be easily seen from any direction. The colour of the illuminated ring can be custom selected from 256 different colours, it is bright enough to remains clearly visible, even in broad daylight. It immediately shows the user if measurement is taking place, if the sensor is switching, or if there is a possible maintenance requirement.

Fit for the future with IO-Link

The option of having all sensor parameters written automatically into the new instrument by the IO-Link master, or the controller during a replacement, also provides additional efficiency. Fast process or recipe changes are typical in the food industry today, and they can be carried out quickly and centrally with this system. The bottom line is that IO-Link saves time while reducing the potential for set up errors to virtually zero. This ensures higher product quality, more optimal utilization of machines and increased process speed − in other words, noticeable savings.

Conclusion: Future-oriented automation from a single source

Hygienic design, system availability, modularisation and networking are the decisive factors for greater efficiency in food processes and for standing out in the face of growing competition. With its decades of experience, VEGA offers ground-breaking level and pressure measurement technology for the automation and monitoring of future-oriented production systems.  Sensors that are optimised for operating under extreme conditions as well as meeting strict requirements on system safety and flexibility.

What makes a modular measurement system revolutionary?

The concept of modularity

The basic idea of modularity is that modules or components can be combined in a flexible way across a system. Modular components are designed to be used independently or as part of an integrated whole. The components may be separated and recombined, giving flexibility and variety in use.

A modular design allows a solution to be tailored to the needs of the application in question without resource-heavy customization. In this way, modularity reduces the complexity of a system.
While modularity is not a new concept, it can be increasingly seen in various fields, including cars, computers, furniture, piping systems, and buildings.

The modular approach is also gaining popularity in industrial measurement systems. Interchangeable measurement probes, transmitters, and software are providing remarkable benefits to users across various measurement applications.

Increased flexibility for changing measurement needs

A major benefit of modular measurement systems is flexibility. With a plug-and-play design, probes can be easily changed, allowing different parameters to be measured. Also, being able to quickly swap probes ensures minimal operational downtime, which can result in significant cost savings.

Transmitters that allow dual probe support, like the Vaisala Indigo 500, offer even greater flexibility. The same transmitter can be used to measure the inlet and outlet conditions of a process, for example, or even various parameters simultaneously and the probes can be easily switched.

Effortless installation, maintenance, and calibration with plug-and-play design

A plug-and-play modular design also ensures smooth installation. The probes can be easily attached to the transmitter, and the system is ready for use. If installation or connection cables are needed, they are typically shared across a modular design, making it more cost efficient and easier to handle.

Maintenance and calibration are also easier because probes can be easily removed for service without needing to remove the transmitter body. This also makes the process of installing replacement probes much easier.

Vaisala’s modular Indigo family

The Vaisala Indigo family takes industrial measurement to the next level. Interchangeable smart probes, transmitters, and Indigo Insight software create a strong chain of data to ensure energy efficiency, safety, and end-product quality in your operations.

Indigo family smart probes offer a flexible solution to measure humidity, dew point, temperature, moisture in oil, carbon dioxide (CO2), or hydrogen peroxide vapor (H2O2).
