Wide Dynamic Range wide angle Camera eliminates vehicle “blind spot”

New Imaging Technologies have introduced a compact wide angle camera system which is designed to be integrated into a vehicle’s wing mirror or mirror support. In the picture, the camera (arrowed) is mounted in the red bulge on the side of a tractor. This analogue camera uses a wide dynamic range CMOS sensor and so operates equally well in daytime and night-time. This camera eliminates the blind spot that occurs for drivers, particularly of large vehicles such as lorries, busses or tractors, and helps, for example, to assist them to see cyclists coming up on the inside of the vehicle.

Barcode and Data Matrix code detection – Balluff Vision-Sensor BVS-E Identification

Balluff’s product line of proven BVS vision sensors includes the BVS-E Identification designed for fast and simple detection of Barcodes, Data Matrix and QR Codes. The user can even read multiple codes within one inspection eliminating the need for several sensors

The BVS-E Identification is just as simple and fast to use as a normal photoelectric sensor, and easy to integrate into an application thanks to its compact dimensions. Tedious training or learning of a special programming language as with smart cameras are a thing of the past. A PLC can be used to easily switch between different inspections, and function modules for various controllers are available from Balluff.

The image sensor reads all common barcodes as well as Data Matrix, Standard and Mini QR Codes regardless of orientation. In addition, printed character and number sequences such as Batch Numbers or Expiry Dates can be verified using optical character verification (OCV). The result of the inspection is indicated on the output as an OK or NOK signal. The code data can also be output via RS232 or Ethernet, such as when verification is required as to which parts have been processed.

The BVS-E Identification vision sensor is available in Visible Red Light or Infrared versions, and with four different lenses 6, 8,12 or 16mm.  The BVS-E has two programmable PNP or NPN outputs for transmitting Inspection results and Trigger Input/output for sensor control and lighting synchronization. The built-in high-output Visible Red or Infrared LED lighting ensures optimal illumination of the inspection area. The power supply and peripherals are connected using two industry-proven M12 ports. To set parameters, the user connects the sensor to a PC and starts it up using the free BVS ConVis configuration software or by a teach button mounted on the sensor.

Balluff also offers a variety of high-power, industrial rated light sources for all BVS versions. The user can choose from among background, spot, ring and dark field lights. And to ensure quick installation of the sensor on the machine Balluff has the ideal solution: custom-designed optional mounting brackets and the Balluff Mounting System eliminate costly and time-consuming homemade fastening methods.

Long travel linear position measurement: Variohm supply draw wire sensors to Hunger Hydraulics for lifting bridge application

Hunger Hydraulic UK Ltd, a part of the international Hunger Hydraulic system consultancy and solutions group, has recently supplied four 4.25 metre stroke telescopic hydraulic cylinders to main contractor John Sisk, to lift a new 80-metre pedestrian and cycle access bridge linking Canning Town station to a new island development on the Leamouth Peninsula in London.

The 160 tonne bridge which was successfully commissioned in July 2015, is raised vertically to allow boats to navigate the river and as an integral part of its hydraulic control and synchronisation system, includes four Celesco SR1 series draw wire linear position sensors that were specified and supplied by Celesco’s UK distributor Variohm EuroSensor.

As conventional hydraulic linear position sensor types could not be considered due to the telescopic style long travel cylinders, Hunger designers opted for draw wire or cable sensor technology and chose the competitively priced Celesco SR1 for its well proven reputation in outdoor construction, agricultural and industrial equipment for rugged build quality and extended durability.  For redundancy purposes, two sensors are mounted and work in parallel each side of the bridge. To ensure complete protection the sensor pairs are encased in a pivoting steel housing which includes telescopically extended cylindrical sections that fully enclose the cable.

For this application, the SR1M model draw wire sensor provides a user-scalable 4…20 mA proportional signal to the control system. The sensor is supplied factory calibrated to the full stroke range but thanks to its internal programmable digital circuitry the output signal can be easily re-scaled to match the actual application stroke length with an easy-to-use push-button zero and span adjust.

Other models in the SR1 series include voltage divider, 0-5/0-10 VDC and incremental encoder versions with standard stroke lengths of 3175 and 4445 mm. The plastic-hybrid precision potentiometer returns a rated life of 250,000 cycles with positional accuracy specified at 0.5% FS with repeatability to 0.1% FS. Along with many draw wire sensors from Celesco Inc., the SR1 is designed for outdoor use featuring an IP67 environmental rating, tough polycarbonate housing and a nylon coated stainless steel cable. The sensor can be universally mounted with cable exit positions oriented in up, down, rear and forward directions and no critical alignment is required. Electrical connection is via an M12 connector with mating cable-sets available.

Variohm EuroSensor is a designer, manufacturer, distributor and supply chain partner providing complete sales and application support across a comprehensive range of position, load, force and temperature sensor technologies – for demanding measurement applications across industry, construction, agriculture, motorsports, research and more.

Free Cable Inspection, Discount and Trade Up Accelerometer offers from DJB Instruments UK Ltd

DJB Instruments UK Ltd is getting into the spirit of the festive season with some end of year budget boosting deals on cable repairs and accelerometers.

November and December are a busy time at DJB as it is a period over which many of their existing customers look to spend any leftover equipment budgets before the end of their budget year.

To add a little extra to the budget leftovers DJB have three offers available until the end of 2015.

The first offer has an environmentally friendly message attached to it. Accelerometer/sensor cables generally have a PTFE or FEP jacket and usually a PTFE insulator, all these materials take a long time to decompose in land fill and even if recycled they use a wide range of chemicals which are not great for the environment. It is often the case that users throw ‘broken’ cables away and buy new ones simply because their original supplier will not repair them, well at DJB they will repair cables from any manufacturer and are able to repair 90% of cables sent to them. Using quality connectors that fit competitor and DJB products they can resurrect your cables for a fraction of the cost of a new one. To encourage you to look at repairs, DJB are offering a free inspection and repair report for up to 20 cables per company. Dig out your box of old cables and see if they can be brought back to life.

Secondly they have a range of stock accelerometers all available with up to 25% discount. This is a genuine discount from the normal selling price and this includes two of their most popular 2015 accelerometers.

  • The unique clip mounted, high temperature IEPE triaxial accelerometer the A/136/V/HT.100. With a sensitivity of 100mV/g and a maximum operating range of 185°C this is a great accelerometer for engine tests as well as for structural testing. The clip mounting option can be used with Bruel & Kjaer clips as a direct replacement for their products.

  • The general purpose IEPE A/120 range is available in top or side entry and also with TNC connectors for more industrial applications. A range of sensitivities is available off the shelf.

The final offer available is to ‘Trade Up’. This scheme is available to customers wishing to trade in old accelerometers from any other manufacturer (though older DJB products are also welcome) and get a healthy discount on an equivalent new DJB product.

Neill Ovenden, DJB’s Managing Director said of the offers….’DJB is proud of its heritage and much of our history has been built on customer satisfaction and offering the most flexible service that we can, cable repairs are not only good for customer saving but they are a great way of contributing to the drive to reduce waste and damage to the environment. Added to this we recognise the needs of all customers to maximise their budgets and the end of year discounts and Trade Up schemes make a lot of sense.’

To get more details of these offers and anything else to do with DJB’s wide range of accelerometers, dynamic pressure transducers, instrumentation, signal conditioning and cable assemblies, contact the sales team on sales@djbinstruments.com
