New addition to Coriolis flow family offers truly smart flow measurement

Expanded ABB Coriolis mass flowmeter family includes a new electronics platform that features self-configuration, integrated accuracy verification, built-in valve control and many other smart tools

ABB has expanded its range of Coriolis flowmeters with the addition of the FCB400, featuring a totally new electronics platform offering users the option of up to five, freely-configurable communication outputs. The entirely digital, internal communication ensures maximum accuracy for compact and remote devices without the need for special cabling.
Using the innovative sensor and application technology “SensorApplicationMemory”, FCB400 saves not only all calibration data but also all measuring point parameters and totalizers, which are linked to the sensor in a non-detachable way. This includes an automatic self-configuration function, which synchronizes the configuration data in the sensor and the transmitter after power has been switched on. The “SensorApplicationMemory” duplicates the configuration data storing it in a permanent memory and ensures safe data synchronization during maintenance, i.e. when the transmitter is replaced.
Application-specific software packages enable the FCB400 to offer a solution for an expanded range of installations. In filling processes, the “FillMass” function directly controls the downstream valve via a special digital output. By means of predefined characteristics e.g. for alcohols, sugar solutions or starch “DensiMass” enables the precise determination of the concentrations of liquid mixtures through high-precision density measurement. Moreover, the “net mass or volume flow rate” can be determined, too.
Another novelty is the integrated verification function “VeriMass”. Using this function FCB400 carries out a self-diagnosis and can test, whether the device is still operating within the specified range. Thus, the user can detect possible erosions or deposits inside the sensor without interrupting the measurement and without removing the device. This ensures the permanent monitoring of the metering tube loop, reduced measuring accuracy can be detected, test cycles can be optimized and critical conditions can be prevented at an early stage. Hence plant availability and safety increase.
The proven, common and intuitive operation concept of all ABB meters enables great ease of use and commissioning. The robust design expands usability at ambient temperatures of -40°C to +70°C and desensitizes the device to excessive vibrations.
The device features an exceptionally low pressure loss and an extremely compact design. It is therefore about 50 % lighter and smaller than many similar devices on the market. The compact metering tube and device design sets new standards for device dimensions and weights solving the space constraints of the process industry. Of course, all relevant Namur recommendations are fulfilled as well as the SIL2 requirements.
The FCB400 is optionally available in a hygienic design variant, named FCH400, for applications in the food and beverage industry.

Senix Introduces Long-Range Level Sensors For Remote Monitoring

Senix Corporation, manufacturer of ToughSonic® ultrasonic level and distance sensors, has introduced two new remote liquid level sensors. The ToughSonic REMOTE 30 and REMOTE 50 digital ultrasonic sensors are lightning-resistant and energy efficient for demanding outdoor applications.

The ToughSonic REMOTE 30 has a maximum range of 30 feet (9.1 meters) and the ToughSonic REMOTE 50 has a maximum range of 50 feet (15.2 meters).  They join the previously released ToughSonic REMOTE 14 to complete the Senix REMOTE sensor family.

Liquid Level Sensors Built For The Great Outdoors

Increasing droughts and floods around the world are driving investment in sophisticated water level monitoring systems.  The ToughSonic REMOTE family of sensors are designed for those demanding applications. They are rugged, stainless steel, immersion-rated (NEMA-4X, NEMA-6P, IP68) sensors designed for years of reliable service in harsh remote monitoring environments. “The technology behind these new sensors has been field-proven in diverse weather conditions since 2011.” Says Doug Boehm, founder and CTO of Senix Corporation. “We have remote level sensors operating reliably in Alaska, the Australian Outback, and just about every climate in between.”

Remote Liquid Level Monitoring Features

ToughSonic REMOTE sensors include a digital interface using Modbus serial data or ASCII protocols for direct communication with Remote Terminal Units (RTUs) and other data collection devices. They also feature Senix Lightning Guard, a system that protects power and communications circuits from repeated 7 kilovolt electrical surges.

Senix customers rely on ToughSonic REMOTE liquid level sensors in places where thousands of lightning strikes a year are common such as Northern Australia where the sensors monitor irrigation assets. Nothing stops a direct lighting strike, but 7 kilovolt surge protection allows sensors to survive transients from nearby strikes.

ToughSonic REMOTE sensors are ready to measure within one second of power-on and use up to 21% less energy than our General Purpose ToughSonic sensors which is important when sensors are operated intermittently and powered by batteries and solar panels.

ToughSonic REMOTE sensors are fully configurable using SenixVIEW sensor configuration and analysis software.

New White Paper on process Oxygen gas monitoring

Quantitech has prepared a comprehensive White Paper on the measurement of Oxygen gas in furnaces and other industrial processes. Quantitech’s Craig Day says: “Oxygen gas concentration measurements are essential for the effective management of many industrial processes, providing an important indicator of combustion performance, fuel usage and process safety.  In many processes, oxygen measurement enables process operators to monitor the progress of chemical reactions; thereby enabling optimisation of product yield.”

The White Paper explores the benefits of oxygen monitoring and examines the technologies available for continuous oxygen monitoring. These include Zirconia and Paramagnetic sensors and Tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS). The relative merits of each technology are discussed and a number of applications for oxygen monitoring are discussed. These include: waste incineration, furnace control, sulphuric acid manufacture, process heaters / FCC regenerator off-gas in refineries, and re-heat furnaces and hot rolling mills in the iron & steel industry.

The White Paper can be downloaded free of charge at www.Quantitech.co.uk/O2WP

Edinburgh Sensors new Chillcard NG range for CO and CO2 gas measurement

The Chillcard NG range of NDIR gas sensors from Edinburgh Sensors has been extended to include two new gases; namely carbon monoxide (CO) and carbon dioxide (CO2).

Their standard sensors for these gases use a miniature lamp with a tungsten filament as the source of infrared light.  However, in applications such as endothermic gas annealing furnaces and gasification, where high levels of hydrogen (H2) are present, the lamp can have a reduced lifetime.  It is possible to repair the sensor but this means delay whilst the lamp is changed and the sensor recalibrated.  The new Chillcard NG sensors are built with a micro-machined thermal infrared emitter which has a longer lifetime in these challenging environments, giving less downtime and reduced long-term cost of ownership. The ‘Chillcard NG’ range of gas sensor instruments also includes high accuracy sensors for the detection and measurement of R-125 and R-134a refrigerant gases, where detection levels of 0 – 3000 ppm by volume are required.

About us:

Edinburgh Sensors, a division of Edinburgh Instruments, is a world-class customer-focused provider of quality gas-sensing solutions.

Hamamatsu new MEMS FPI sensor

Hamamatsu Photonics introduces the latest development in MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) technology with the MEMS FPI C13272; a single element detector that is able to give spectral information by utilising a Fabray-Perot Interferometer.

A voltage controls the size of the gap between two mirrors in a MEMS structure. The size of this gap determines the wavelength of light that is allowed to pass through. By quickly changing the voltage across these mirrors, the structure acts as a tuneable filter. This means that the user effectively has a spectrometer but with the low cost and small footprint of a single element sensor.

Such a device opens up exciting avenues in applications like atmospheric measurement; where handheld devices require components that are low size and low power consumption.

Solid-state silicon photomultipliers offer performance and application advantages

First Sensor extends its range of optical sensors with innovative solid-state silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) for the detection of ultra-low light levels down to single photons. Compared to conventional photomultiplier tubes, SiPMs offer significant advantages such as low operating voltage, excellent temperature stability, immunity to magnetic fields and a much smaller size for easy system integration. The detectors are optimized for near ultraviolet (Series SiPM-NUV) or red, green and blue (Series SiPM-RGB) light detection with peak sensitivities at 420 nm or 550 nm.

The silicon photomultipliers consist of a matrix of multiple avalanche photodiode (APD) micro-cells operated above their breakdown voltage (Geiger mode). NUV- and RGB-SiPMs from First Sensor feature extremely low temperature coefficients of the breakdown voltage and gain, which allows for highly accurate and stable measurements. Enhanced materials and semiconductor technology enable low-noise devices with reduced dark count rate, crosstalk and very low afterpulsing probability typ. <4 %. The precision SiPM detectors are designed to achieve very high gain (>106) and high photon detection efficiencies. The edgeless SiPM dies ensure high cell fill-factors and maximized active areas in array arrangements. The Chip-Scale-Package (CSP) provides a cost-effective and RoHS compliant solution suitable for reflow soldering. For custom specific applications First Sensor develops and manufactures arrays, modules and complete systems for OEM customers worldwide.

Important features of the SiPM-NUV and SiPM-RGB silicon photomultipliers:

  • Ultra-low light detection down to single photons
  • Low operating voltage
  • High gain and low noise
  • Immunity to magnetic fields

Typical applications of silicon photomultipliers from First Sensor include high energy physics, medical diagnostics, nuclear medicine, homeland security and analytical instruments. Due to the immunity to external magnetic fields, SiPM detctors are ideal for medical imaging applications such as combined tomography systems using magnetic resonance tomography (MRT) and positron emission tomography (PET) or single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT).
